How to Resolve a Filament Tangle
This article provides tips and best practices to help you avoid filament tangling. Proper handling and storage of filaments can prevent most tangling issues.
Why Filaments Tangle
Filament tangling usually happens for one of two reasons:
- Losing Track of the End: When the filament end gets under another strand in the spool, which can be avoided by proper usage and storage.
- Factory Errors: Although we use precise winding technology to ensure the filaments are wound onto the spool efficiently and uniformly, there is still a certain possibility of tangling due to factory errors.
How to Resolve a Tangle
- After Using: Insert the filament end into the small holes on the side of the spool to secure it, preventing it from becoming loose when not in use.
- Before Using: Trim the bent tip with a side cutter before inserting it into the printer’s extruder or PTFE tube, as bent filaments can cause jams inside the PTFE tube or poor print quality. Secure the spool onto the spool holder to ensure it spins freely but with minimum tension. Completely loose spools can spin more than they should when the filament is pulled due to gravity and its own weight, causing tangling during the print job.
- If Tangled: Unwind 8-10 loops of filament to find where it get tangled and carefully wind them back onto the spool.
